What is Bluetooth?

Added: 21 October 2026

Bluetooth is a wireless communication technology for exchanging data between devices. It is used in headphones, keyboards, sensors and wearables. It is not internet access itself; devices can communicate over Bluetooth without an internet connection.

Radio links and pairing

The Bluetooth family includes different radio approaches such as Classic and Low Energy. Profiles and services determine which functions devices can share. A Bluetooth label on two products does not guarantee compatibility for every feature. During pairing, devices may establish security information needed for the connection and reuse it later. Low-energy operation is useful for brief data exchanges and battery-sensitive applications. Actual range is not a fixed number: transmitter power, antennas, obstacles, interference and operating mode all matter. Walls and crowded radio environments can weaken a connection.

Use and troubleshooting

A wireless mouse sends small amounts of data regularly, while headphones carry continuous audio; their latency and energy needs differ. Audio quality depends on mutually supported formats and device design, not merely the Bluetooth version. Troubleshooting can check battery level, distance, pairing records and automatic connections to another device. Unknown pairing requests should be rejected and unused connections removed. Device updates matter for security and compatibility. Short-range operation does not automatically guarantee security; appropriate pairing and access controls remain necessary.
