What is a digital signature?
A digital signature is cryptographic evidence made with a private key and checked with the corresponding public key.
Verification process
A digest is signed with a private key. The verifier uses the public key to check integrity; establishing who controls that key requires a separate trusted identity process.
Uses and limitations
Used for software updates and documents. Signatures do not hide content; stolen private keys require revocation. Legal effect depends on jurisdiction and signature type.
