What is FIDO2?

Added: 24 October 2026

FIDO2 is a family of public-key authentication standards for web sign-in, including WebAuthn and authenticator communication.

Authentication components

A device or security key creates a site-specific key pair. The private key stays with the authenticator; the user approves the action and the server verifies a signature.

Uses and limitations

It reduces phishing risk, but account recovery still needs careful design. Biometrics typically unlock the local authenticator rather than being stored by the site.
