What is deep learning?

Added: 21 October 2026

Deep learning is a machine learning approach that uses multilayer artificial neural networks. Layers transform inputs sequentially and learn representations useful for a task. Image recognition, speech processing and language applications are among its uses.

How neural networks are trained

A network produces output through inputs, weights and nonlinear operations. During training, a loss function measures the difference between output and target. Backpropagation and optimization methods adjust weights to reduce that error. Transforming image patterns such as edges or textures into more complex structures illustrates layered representation, although not every network is so easily interpreted. Different architectures serve different data and tasks. Adapting a pretrained model to another task can reduce the need to train from scratch. However, limitations inherited from its earlier data can still affect the new application.

Resource requirements and reliability

Training deep networks can require substantial data, computing power and energy, depending on model size and task. A larger model is not always better. Smaller methods may be sufficient or more suitable for simple tabular data. Performance should be measured on independent examples and under real operating conditions. Changes in image lighting, recording environments or text language can reduce performance. A high confidence score does not guarantee correctness. Bias, explainability and data privacy need separate assessment. Deployment decisions should consider error types, latency, maintenance cost and how people will supervise results, rather than relying only on a benchmark score.
