What is a message queue?

Added: 24 October 2026

A message queue holds work sent by one system for later processing by another.

Producers and consumers

A producer enqueues a message; a consumer processes and acknowledges it. Retries and dead-letter queues handle failures. Delivery guarantees vary by implementation.

Uses and limitations

It separates email or image jobs from user requests. Monitor backlog, latency and duplicate effects; unacknowledged work may run twice.
