What is retrieval-augmented generation?
Retrieval-augmented generation supplies relevant retrieved documents to a generative model before it answers.
Retrieval and generation
Documents are chunked and indexed; candidate passages are retrieved for a question and supplied with citations. Query formulation, ranking and verification affect quality.
Uses and limitations
It can connect an assistant to organizational documents. Bad, stale or irrelevant retrieval can still produce wrong answers; permissions and citations matter.
