What is data governance?

Added: 24 October 2026

Data governance defines ownership, quality, access, security and use of data within an organization.

Responsibility and quality

Assign data owners and stewards, document definitions, quality measures, access rules and retention. Lineage records explain how a dataset was produced.

Uses and limitations

It supports consistent reporting and safe sharing. Excess bureaucracy may obstruct useful data work, so controls should fit risk and purpose.
