What is a data lake?

Added: 24 October 2026

A data lake stores raw or lightly processed data from multiple sources in varied formats.

Storage organization

Objects are cataloged with metadata and provenance. Processing jobs create curated datasets from raw inputs, while access policies separate layers.

Uses and limitations

It enables exploration and machine learning. Without catalogs, quality controls and permissions it can become an unusable collection of files.
