What is public key infrastructure?

Added: 24 October 2026

Public key infrastructure links public keys to identities through certificates, authorities and validation processes.

Certificate chain

A certificate authority signs a certificate for a name or subject. Clients check the chain, intended use, validity and identity; renewal and revocation are part of the lifecycle.

Uses and limitations

Used in HTTPS and device identity. A valid certificate does not by itself establish that a site’s content is trustworthy.
