What is end-to-end encryption?

Added: 24 October 2026

With end-to-end encryption, content is encrypted on the sender’s device and decrypted on the intended recipient’s device.

Message path

A server can relay the message without normally reading its content. Device keys and identity checks are critical; moving chats to a new device may alter the security model.

Uses and limitations

Metadata such as communication timing can remain visible. Compromised endpoints or insecure backups can bypass the protection.
