What is RISC-V?
RISC-V is an open-standard instruction set architecture, or ISA, describing how software communicates with a processor. It is not one specific chip.
How it works and where it is used
1. How it works A base ISA and optional extensions define instructions and behavior. Designers can build different microarchitectures; shared ISA does not imply identical speed or power. 2. Applications and examples Uses range from embedded systems to larger computers. Open specifications aid development, but fabrication, verification and software support remain substantial work.
Limits and good practice
3. Limitations and security Extension choices affect compatibility. An open ISA does not make every chip design open source or free to manufacture. 4. Practical considerations Choose ISA version, extensions, tools and operating-system support together. Benchmark actual hardware and workloads, not an architecture name.
