What is responsive web design?

Added: 21 October 2026

Responsive web design adapts an interface to screens such as phones, tablets and computers. Its purpose is not simply to shrink a page, but to keep content readable, navigation understandable and tasks usable.

Building a flexible layout

Flexible measurements, CSS Grid or Flexbox layouts and appropriate maximum widths can replace rigid dimensions. Media queries change columns or typography under defined conditions. Breakpoints should reflect where content becomes cramped, not just popular device models. Images should stay within their containers and use appropriately sized sources. The viewport setting tells mobile browsers how the page relates to device width. Long links, tables and form fields need separate checks. One overflowing element can cause horizontal scrolling across the entire page. Hiding overflow alone does not solve the problem; it may leave clipped content or unreachable controls.

Considering usability and performance together

Forcing every desktop link into a single line of tiny text on a phone can harm readability. Content priorities, controlled menus and suitable touch targets provide better solutions. Wide structures such as tables can scroll within their own regions when necessary. Designs should be tested at different widths, in landscape orientation and with enlarged text. Sending the same large, high-resolution image to every device creates unnecessary load on mobile connections. Responsive design is connected to accessibility and performance. Keeping a news card's image and link usable when its headline takes more lines matters more than simply producing an attractive screenshot.
