What is data encryption?

Added: 24 October 2026

Encryption transforms readable data with a key so only authorized parties can recover it.

Keys and algorithms

Symmetric encryption uses a shared secret; public-key techniques support key exchange and signatures. Data in transit and at rest face different threats.

Uses and limitations

Disk encryption reduces lost-device risk and TLS protects transit. Weak key management, backup security or access control can still expose data.
