What is a coordinate reference system?

Added: 25 October 2026

A coordinate reference system provides a numerical framework for locating places on Earth.

Formation, concepts and processes

Latitude and longitude describe positions with angles; projected coordinates may use units such as meters. A datum defines the reference model and origin. Identical coordinate numbers can indicate different places in different systems.

Examples, applications and limits

When matching map layers, verify the reference code, units, axis order and transformation. Small GPS uncertainty does not make a displayed point a legally exact property boundary. Precise work requires suitable surveys and official records.
