What is population density?
Population density is the number of people per unit of area within a defined boundary.
Definition and processes
Core concept Arithmetic density divides total population by total area, usually yielding people per square kilometer. Results depend on boundary and census date. How it is studied It can be calculated for countries, districts or grid cells. A countrywide mean hides crowded cities and sparsely inhabited mountains, so smaller units can be more informative.
Applications and caveats
Why it matters Density is a starting indicator for transport, health and infrastructure planning. Alone it does not measure welfare, housing quality or service access. Common misunderstandings High area density does not automatically mean overcrowded homes. Using cultivable land instead of total area produces a different measure.
