What is a geographic region?
A region is an area defined by selected shared characteristics or connections.
Formation, concepts and processes
A formal region may use climate or vegetation, while a functional region is organized around a center. Administrative boundaries follow official decisions. Boundaries for different purposes may not coincide, and transitions need not be sharp.
Examples, applications and limits
Regionalization aids comparison and planning but does not mean every place within a region is identical. Turkey’s geographical regions are an educational classification, not exact equivalents of provincial borders or ecological systems. Findings depend on chosen criteria.
