What are absolute and relative location?
Absolute location uses coordinates; relative location describes position with respect to other places and networks.
Formation, concepts and processes
A port’s coordinates stay fixed while its position in trade networks can change. Distance can mean travel time and access cost as well as kilometers. Mountains, borders or missing transport links may make nearby places functionally distant.
Examples, applications and limits
Relative location helps explain population, trade and services but does not alone determine prosperity. History, institutions and decisions also matter. Distances seen on a projected map require suitable measurement.
