What is a geographic information system?
A geographic information system (GIS) combines methods for collecting, organizing, analyzing and mapping location-based data.
Formation, concepts and processes
Vector data represent points, lines and areas; raster data represent gridded surfaces. Roads, population and elevation can be queried together. Misidentified coordinate systems shift layers, while data quality, scale and currency affect results.
Examples, applications and limits
GIS supports disaster planning, transportation, farming and environmental monitoring. Two events overlapping on a map do not automatically establish causation. Access control and aggregation matter when sensitive location records are combined.
