What is a valley?

Added: 25 October 2026

A valley is a low corridor extending between higher areas.

Formation, concepts and processes

Rivers often erode V-shaped profiles while former glaciers may leave broader U-shaped profiles. Bedrock, flow, tectonics and time modify real shapes, so shape alone does not prove origin. Sediment can create flat valley floors.

Examples, applications and limits

Valleys can carry transport routes, farms and settlements. Proximity to a floodplain raises flood risk. Planning considers past floods, slope stability and current land use together.
