What is a coastal lagoon?
A coastal lagoon is shallow water partially separated from the open sea by a barrier.
Formation, concepts and processes
Waves and coastal currents build sandy barriers while inlets maintain exchange with the sea. River inflow, evaporation and tidal connection influence salinity. A lagoon is not necessarily equivalent to a freshwater lake isolated from the sea.
Examples, applications and limits
Lagoons can be important for birds and juvenile fish. Pollution, infilling and restricted exchange can disturb oxygen balance. Conservation considers catchment, shore and sea connections together.
