What is a population pyramid?
A population pyramid uses paired bars to show a population’s age and sex distribution.
Formation, concepts and processes
A broad base may reflect past high births; narrower cohorts may reflect migration or historical events. Shape alone does not prove a cause. Check age bands, data date and whether bars show counts or percentages.
Examples, applications and limits
It informs school, health and pension planning. Forecasts require assumptions about births, deaths and migration; the chart is not a fixed destiny. Binary-sex datasets also have methodological limitations.
