What is a wetland?

Added: 25 October 2026

A wetland is an ecosystem where soil remains saturated for all or part of the year.

Formation, concepts and processes

Marshes, reed beds, floodplain wetlands and coastal lagoons differ. Their water regimes shape distinctive soils and water-adapted plant communities. A wetland need not have visible open water year-round.

Examples, applications and limits

Wetlands can store water, retain sediments and support wildlife. They do not eliminate all floods or filter unlimited pollution. Drainage, filling and diversion impair their functions.
