What is land use?
Land use describes how people employ an area for farming, housing, forests, industry or conservation.
Formation, concepts and processes
Land cover is what physically lies on the surface, while use describes purpose; grass may be a park or pasture. Satellite images reveal cover, but purpose may require records and fieldwork. A parcel can change use over time.
Examples, applications and limits
Planning balances water, soil, biodiversity and housing. Comparisons require consistent definitions and image dates. Development does not have identical impacts in every place.
