What is remote sensing?
Remote sensing observes Earth without direct contact, using satellite, aircraft or other sensors.
Formation, concepts and processes
Passive sensors measure reflected sunlight or emitted heat; active radar and lidar measure returning signals. Different wavelengths reveal different aspects of vegetation, water and surface temperature. Clouds obstruct some optical images.
Examples, applications and limits
Time series track fire scars, land use and coastal change. A pixel may contain several surface types, so ground observations help validation. Comparisons without image date and resolution can mislead.
