What is groundwater?

Added: 25 October 2026

Groundwater is water occupying pores and fractures below the ground.

Formation, concepts and processes

Rain and surface water infiltrate permeable areas and recharge aquifers. Groundwater usually moves slowly between grains rather than flowing as a river in a giant cave. The water table varies with recharge and withdrawal.

Examples, applications and limits

Wells supply drinking and irrigation water, but overpumping lowers levels and can invite seawater intrusion near coasts. Pollutants also travel underground and are difficult to remove. Sustainable use tracks both quantity and quality.
