How do sand dunes form?
Sand dunes form where wind-blown sand accumulates as wind slows or meets an obstacle.
Formation, concepts and processes
Grain size, wind direction, sand supply and vegetation shape dunes. Sand climbs the windward side and may avalanche down the lee side, moving the dune. Coastal and desert dunes share mechanics but differ environmentally.
Examples, applications and limits
Coastal dunes can buffer storm waves. Roots hold sand, while trampling and construction weaken protection. Not every dune moves continuously; vegetation can stabilize it.
