What is a barrier beach?
A barrier beach is a long low ridge of sand or gravel shaped by waves and longshore transport.
Formation, concepts and processes
Sediment moving alongshore can build spits and barriers across bays. Storms and sea-level change reshape them. Lagoons or wetlands may form behind them; a barrier is not a permanent rigid wall.
Examples, applications and limits
Building on a barrier can restrict sediment movement and storm adjustment. Management examines wave direction, sediment supply and effects along the coast. Trapping sand in one place can deprive neighboring shores.
