What was the Maastricht Treaty?
The Maastricht Treaty was signed in 1992 and entered into force in 1993, marking the foundation of the European Union.
Historical context and developments
Economic and monetary union, EU citizenship and areas of cooperation were key elements. Members did not join every policy in the same way. European integration predated the treaty and built on earlier communities.
Consequences and interpreting sources
Debates continued over shared powers, democratic oversight and national choices. The euro was introduced later, so the treaty’s goals and outcomes should not be conflated.
