What was the Hundred Years’ War?
The Hundred Years’ War names intermittent conflicts between the English and French crowns from 1337 to 1453.
Historical context and developments
Dynastic claims, territories and alliances drove conflict. Fighting was not continuous or confined to two monarchs; sieges, local interests and epidemics affected ordinary people. Joan of Arc played a major role late in the war.
Consequences and interpreting sources
England ultimately lost most continental holdings. Taxation, armies and royal institutions changed; modern ideas of national identity should not be projected unchanged onto the past.
