How did the Soviet Union dissolve?
The Soviet Union dissolved in late 1991 as republics asserted independence and central institutions ended.
Historical context and developments
Economic stagnation, reforms, national movements and legitimacy problems interacted. Gorbachev’s glasnost and perestroika sought change but had unexpected outcomes. The August coup attempt further weakened the center.
Consequences and interpreting sources
Outcomes differed across successor states in borders, economies and identity. One leader’s decision or an external rival’s “victory” is too simple an explanation.
