What was the American War of Independence?
The American War of Independence began in 1775 between Britain and its North American colonies. The Declaration of Independence was adopted in 1776.
Origins and development
1. Context and chronology Disputes over taxation, representation and imperial rule grew. Fighting began in 1775; the Declaration of 4 July 1776 explained separation. French and other support affected the war. 2. Society, government and events Colonists were divided among independence supporters, loyalists and others. Enslaved and Indigenous peoples faced different consequences; liberty rhetoric did not mean equal rights.
Legacy and historical evidence
3. Consequences and significance The 1783 Treaty of Paris recognized US independence. Constitution-making followed, while representation and slavery remained unresolved contradictions. 4. Evidence and interpretation Drafts of the Declaration, congressional records and diplomacy show stages of change. Founding narratives should include communities beyond prominent leaders.
