What is the history of Troy?

Added: 24 October 2026

Troy at Hisarlık near Çanakkale consists of successive settlement layers. The archaeological city and the epic account are different kinds of evidence.

Origins and development

1. Context and chronology The mound records about four millennia of occupation, including Bronze Age and later phases. Its position near the straits linked Anatolia and the Aegean. 2. Society, government and events Walls and houses reveal changes across named archaeological layers. No layer can simply be equated with all the characters and events of the epic.

Legacy and historical evidence

3. Consequences and significance Troy matters for early urban history and the later influence of ancient literature. There is no direct archaeological proof of the wooden horse story. 4. Evidence and interpretation Early excavation sometimes damaged context; modern work records layers and find locations closely. Epic texts can frame questions but do not replace material evidence.
