How was Italy unified?
Nineteenth-century Italian unification involved war, diplomacy and popular movements among states of the peninsula.
Historical context and developments
Piedmont-Sardinia, Cavour’s diplomacy and Garibaldi’s campaigns played different roles. The Kingdom of Italy was proclaimed in 1861; Venetia and Rome joined later. It was not one uprising supported uniformly by everyone.
Consequences and interpreting sources
Regional differences in income, language and representation persisted. History should include peasants, women and southern regions as well as celebrated leaders.
