Why is the Shang dynasty important?
The Shang era in late second-millennium BCE China provides evidence of states, bronze work and writing.
Historical context and developments
Finds near Anyang, bronze vessels and oracle bones illuminate rulers’ rituals and concerns. Written records are valuable but largely reflect courts, so archaeology also matters for ordinary people’s lives.
Consequences and interpreting sources
Zhou rule followed Shang, and later accounts interpreted the earlier era for political ends. Treating one dynasty as the direct source of every later cultural feature overlooks change.
