How did the Greek War of Independence begin?

Added: 25 October 2026

The uprisings beginning in 1821 formed a multiregional struggle for separation from Ottoman rule.

Historical context and developments

Local leaders, diaspora networks and European political ideas mattered. Fighting varied across the Peloponnese, islands and other regions, with violence against civilians on both sides. Britain, France and Russia expanded the international dimension.

Consequences and interpreting sources

Recognition of independence in 1830 did not settle borders or every community’s future. Modern national identities should not be projected unchanged into the past.
