How was the United Nations founded?
The United Nations was founded under a Charter drafted after World War II to support peace and international cooperation.
Historical context and developments
The Charter was adopted at the 1945 San Francisco conference and entered into force on 24 October. The General Assembly, Security Council and other bodies have distinct roles. Founding drew on the League’s experience and wartime destruction.
Consequences and interpreting sources
Alongside work on peace, health and human rights, power politics and veto rules limit it. It is neither a world government nor able to stop every conflict automatically.
