The Greco-Persian Wars were conflicts in the early fifth century BCE between Achaemenid forces and several Greek city-states.
Historical context and developments
The Ionian Revolt, Marathon, Thermopylae, Salamis and Plataea were distinct phases. Greek cities were not one state, and their alliances varied. The Persian Empire was far more than these campaigns.
Consequences and interpreting sources
Greek accounts heavily shaped later memory, so inflated army figures and simple “East versus West” stories need scrutiny. Athens’ subsequent rise is part of the story too.
