What was the Safavid state?
The Safavid dynasty ruled a broad Iran-centered polity from the early sixteenth to the early eighteenth century.
Historical context and developments
Rule expanded under Shah Ismail, and Twelver Shi‘ism became central to state identity. Rivalry with Ottoman and Uzbek powers shaped borders. Isfahan became prominent in trade and architecture, especially under Shah Abbas.
Consequences and interpreting sources
Religious and political change was uneven; local communities and nomadic forces mattered. Reducing Safavid history to Ottoman wars obscures social transformations within Iran.
