How was slavery abolished in the United States?
Abolition in the United States emerged from enslaved people’s resistance, abolitionist organizing and the Civil War.
Historical context and developments
The 1863 Emancipation Proclamation applied to areas in rebellion and made freedom a war aim; it did not end all slavery by itself. The Thirteenth Amendment in 1865 prohibited slavery constitutionally with a penal exception.
Consequences and interpreting sources
Citizenship, land, voting and violence remained contested after emancipation. The history is not one president’s act alone but also people’s struggles and the inequalities that followed.
