What is Lowland tapir facts?
The lowland tapir is a large South American forest and wetland herbivore with a short flexible snout.
Anatomy, behavior and diet
Its snout gathers leaves and fruit; it swims and may seek refuge in water. Fruit eating and seed dispersal can help forest regeneration. Despite its appearance, it shares the odd-toed ungulate order with horses.
Habitat and conservation
It needs substantial habitat; forest loss, hunting and roads fragment populations. Young animals have patterned coats that fade. Conservation depends on habitat connectivity.
