What is Hippopotamus?
The hippopotamus, Hippopotamus amphibius, is a large African mammal that spends much of the day in water and grazes mainly on land.
Traits and way of life
1. Species and identifying features Its high-set eyes, ears and nostrils allow it to sense its surroundings while submerged. Large canine teeth serve especially in defense and conflict; skin secretion offers limited sun protection. 2. Habitat and diet It rests in rivers and lakes and generally grazes on short grass after dusk. Moving between water and land transfers nutrients, with complex effects on aquatic ecosystems.
Behavior and conservation
3. Behavior and reproduction Groups gather in water and males may defend space. A female normally has one calf. Its size and powerful jaws make distance essential around people. 4. Ecology and conservation It links wetland and grassland habitats. Habitat loss, changes to water use and illegal hunting create pressure. Conserving migration routes and wetlands matters.
