What is Koala?
The koala, Phascolarctos cinereus, is a marsupial of eastern and southeastern Australian eucalypt forests, not a bear.
Traits and way of life
1. Species and identifying features Koalas have thick fur, strong claws and a pouch in which the newborn continues developing. Appearance and habitat vary among regions. 2. Habitat and diet They select leaves from suitable eucalypt species, using specialized digestion for fibrous, low-energy food. Long rest periods relate to that energy budget.
Behavior and conservation
3. Behavior and reproduction Usually solitary, they communicate with calls and scent. The young remains in the pouch and later rides on its mother. Roads pose danger during ground crossings. 4. Ecology and conservation Habitat fragmentation, fire, heat, vehicles, dogs and disease affect populations. Conserving suitable trees and connected habitat is central; status varies by region.
