What is Tiger?

Added: 24 October 2026

The tiger, Panthera tigris, is a striped big cat native to Asia. It uses forests, grasslands and wetlands; stripe patterns differ between individuals.

Traits and way of life

1. Species and identifying features Panthera tigris is a Panthera cat with dark stripes on an orange coat. White coloration does not make a separate species; subspecies classifications can change. 2. Habitat and diet It hunts deer, wild pigs and other mammals. Cover and water matter. Asian populations are fragmented, making habitat connections important.

Behavior and conservation

3. Behavior and reproduction Adults are usually solitary and mark areas. Mothers raise cubs and help them learn hunting. Prey supply and human pressure shape survival. 4. Ecology and conservation As a large predator it influences ecosystems. Habitat loss, poaching and conflict threaten populations; conservation must include prey, corridors and communities.
