What is Giant panda?
The giant panda, Ailuropoda melanoleuca, is a bear of Chinese mountain forests whose diet relies heavily on bamboo; it is not closely related to the red panda.
Traits and way of life
1. Species and identifying features Black-and-white fur and an enlarged wrist bone distinguish it. The bone acts like a grasping thumb, though it is not a true thumb. It belongs to the bear family. 2. Habitat and diet It lives in mountain bamboo forests and eats different bamboo parts by season. Long feeding periods and connections between forest patches support survival.
Behavior and conservation
3. Behavior and reproduction It is mostly solitary and uses scent marks. Females invest heavily in a small number of young; successful breeding also depends on connected habitat. 4. Ecology and conservation Reserves and corridors have helped, while fragmentation and climate change remain long-term pressures. Conservation gains do not remove all future risks.
