What is Common octopus?
The common octopus, Octopus vulgaris, is a cephalopod found in coastal waters including the Mediterranean and eastern Atlantic. Its broader taxonomy is still studied.
Traits and way of life
1. Species and identifying features Eight sucker-bearing arms, a soft body and a strong beak distinguish this mollusk. Rapid changes in color and skin texture aid camouflage and communication. 2. Habitat and diet It inhabits rocky and sandy coastal bottoms, hunting crabs, bivalves and other small animals. Dens provide shelter and a base for foraging.
Behavior and conservation
3. Behavior and reproduction Usually solitary, females guard and ventilate eggs and may feed little during brooding. Learning and problem solving have been observed; the life cycle is relatively short. 4. Ecology and conservation It is both predator and prey in coastal food webs. Temperature, habitat damage and fishing pressure influence local populations; regional taxonomy and data matter.
