What is Polar bear?
The polar bear, Ursus maritimus, is associated with Arctic sea ice and coasts. Its pale-looking fur and insulating fat help it live in cold conditions.
Traits and way of life
1. Species and identifying features Ursus maritimus is related to but distinct from brown bears. Large paws aid swimming and travel on ice; fur and fat work together in insulation. 2. Habitat and diet Seals are major prey and sea ice is an important hunting platform. Land foods cannot simply replace seal hunting for most populations.
Behavior and conservation
3. Behavior and reproduction Adults are generally solitary. Females den and nurse cubs, which remain dependent for a long period. Ice and energy stores affect reproductive success. 4. Ecology and conservation It is an Arctic top predator. Sea-ice loss changes hunting opportunities and can increase human encounters; conservation considers ice and community safety.
