What is Axolotl facts?

Added: 25 October 2026

Axolotls are Mexican salamanders that can retain external gills and an aquatic form into adulthood.

Anatomy, behavior and diet

This is neoteny: they can reproduce without the conspicuous transition seen in many land salamanders. Limb regeneration is studied, but does not mean limitless recovery from any injury. They feed on small aquatic prey.

Habitat and conservation

Their native Xochimilco habitat faces pollution, water change and introduced species. Many captive individuals do not mean wild populations are secure. Unplanned release is inappropriate.
