Added: 25 October 2026

The North American porcupine is a tree-climbing rodent with defensive quills.

Anatomy, behavior and diet

Quills are modified hairs; they are not shot at a distance but can lodge on contact. Claws help climbing, and bark, buds and leaves are foods. It is a rodent, not a true hedgehog.

Habitat and conservation

Bark feeding can conflict with forestry. Encounters with dogs can injure them and need veterinary care. Defensive behavior is not the same as aggression.
