Added: 25 October 2026

California sea lions are pinniped marine mammals of the Pacific coast.

Anatomy, behavior and diet

External ear flaps and hind flippers that rotate under the body help distinguish them from true seals. They catch fish and squid and rest in coastal colonies. Agile in water, they come ashore to breed and rest.

Habitat and conservation

Fishing gear entanglement, pollution and close human contact are risks. Their appearance does not justify approaching; leave pups or sick animals to trained rescuers.
