What does a CNC operator do?

Added: 25 October 2026

A CNC operator helps produce parts to specified dimensions and quality on computer-controlled machines.

Duties and work settings

They check drawings, material, tools and fixtures. Before running a program, they verify offsets and safe movements, then measure parts to identify adjustments. Operating and programming may be separate duties.

Skills, safety and entry routes

Safety rules address rotating tools, chips and cutting fluid. Track tolerances, waste and maintenance; one good part does not prove an entire batch meets specification.
